Yeah, I know I’m about 5 days late on this subject, so I guess I’m in good company with GWB and the National Guard and all…

I’m not trying to belittle the suffering and devastation that Katrina caused and continues to cause, but the hurricane and the destruction of New Orleans isn’t even the main story anymore; the ineptness of the government and our “leaders” is.

I keep hearing all sorts of excuses, blaming it on the magnitude of the disaster, how many people are making heroic efforts to help the disenfranchised and so on and so forth. There’s a lot of back-patting among the politicians and leaders of the various government agencies. I understand this. I understand that Katrina probably is the worst natural disaster in American history.

What I don’t understand is why a hospital whithout power, surrounded by water, and with many critical patients suffering from lack of care, food and water, had to wait 5 days for the rescue. The roof was clear, and if helicopters could land on it today, they could have landed as soon as the winds subsided.

I also don’t understand that dead bodies are floating in the waters of downtown NOLA, nibbled by rats, while rescuers claim they can’t get in when CNN can.

I don’t understand the fucking Governor of Louisiana, from her dry safety in Baton Rouge, advocating a shoot to kill policy towards the “looters” who, abandoned by our government in ever worsening and life threatening conditions, help themselves to baby formula, bread and soda in grocery stores. FUCK HER! No, I mean it, fuck the goddam bitch with a broken off broom stick!

I don’t understand Congress taking 5 days to convene to do something while it took them only 1 day to get together for Terri Shiavo.

I don’t understand GWB taking AF1 for a sightseeing trip over the disaster area several days after the hit when he should have commanded (yeah, he is the Commader in Chief after all!) the military leaders to get off of their asses and be in NOLA and other affected areas the very next day, in the thousands, carrying supplies to the needy OR ELSE HEADS WOULD ROLL!

I guess I just don’t understand why we can send people to the moon, but can’t drop a fucking bottle of water and a sandwich onto a rooftop in New Orleans!?!?!?!

There has also been a lot of talk about how this whole thing exemplifies the racial divide in America. At first I blew this off, but now that I’ve had time to think about it I’m not so sure. What if this disaster had taken place in Beverly Hills? In Westchester county in New York? In Boston, Massachussets? Would it still have taken 5 days for the authorities to do something?
